The 15 Settings

1

Notification Nuclear Audit

Notifications
Settings > Notifications

Turn off all non-essential notifications. If an app notification has never contained urgent information, disable it.

Why this matters:

Every notification is an interruption designed to pull you back in. Start with zero notifications and add back only what's truly critical.

Action step:

Disable notifications for social media, news, shopping, and entertainment apps.

2

Enable Focus Modes

Focus
Settings > Focus

Set up Work, Sleep, and Personal focus modes with specific apps and contacts allowed in each.

Why this matters:

Focus modes automatically silence distractions based on your context, removing the need to manually toggle Do Not Disturb.

Action step:

Create 3 focus modes: Work (only work apps/contacts), Sleep (only emergencies), Personal (only close friends/family).

3

Schedule Focus Modes

Focus
Settings > Focus > [Mode] > Add Schedule

Set automatic triggers: Sleep focus from 10pm-7am, Work focus Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.

Why this matters:

Automation removes decision fatigue. Your phone adapts to your schedule without you thinking about it.

Action step:

Set Sleep focus to activate automatically at bedtime and disable when your alarm goes off.

4

Remove Social Apps from Home Screen

Home Screen
Long press app > Remove from Home Screen

Move Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and other time-wasters to the App Library only.

Why this matters:

Out of sight, out of mind. Forcing yourself to search for the app creates a moment of friction that breaks autopilot.

Action step:

Keep only productivity, communication, and utility apps on your home screen.

5

Use App Limits Strategically

Screen Time
Settings > Screen Time > App Limits

Set generous limits (2-3 hours) for social media categories, not strict ones you'll ignore.

Why this matters:

The goal isn't restriction—it's awareness. A notification at 2 hours serves as a checkpoint, not a hard stop.

Action step:

Set a 2-hour daily limit for Social Networking category. Don't block at limit—just get the reminder.

6

Disable Raise to Wake

Display
Settings > Display & Brightness > Raise to Wake

Turn off the feature that lights up your screen when you pick up your phone.

Why this matters:

Every time your screen lights up, it's a visual cue to check. Removing this reduces unconscious pickups by 30-40%.

Action step:

Disable Raise to Wake. Use the power button intentionally when you want to check your phone.

7

Enable Grayscale Shortcut

Accessibility
Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut > Color Filters

Set up triple-click side button to toggle grayscale mode.

Why this matters:

Color is designed to grab attention. Grayscale makes your phone less appealing without losing functionality.

Action step:

Triple-click your side button to enable grayscale. Use it during focus time or evenings.

8

Customize Lock Screen

Lock Screen
Settings > Wallpaper

Remove widgets and notifications from your lock screen. Keep it minimal.

Why this matters:

Your lock screen shouldn't be a dashboard. It should be a blank slate that doesn't tempt you to unlock.

Action step:

Remove all widgets. Disable notification previews. Use a calming photo or solid color.

9

Turn Off Badge App Icons

Notifications
Settings > Notifications > [App] > Badges

Disable the red badge counters on social media apps.

Why this matters:

Those red dots are psychological triggers designed to create anxiety. Removing them removes the urgency.

Action step:

Turn off badges for all social media, email, and messaging apps except your primary contact method.

10

Disable Siri Suggestions

Siri
Settings > Siri & Search

Turn off app suggestions on lock screen, home screen, and in search.

Why this matters:

Siri learns to suggest the apps you use most—often social media. This creates automatic prompts to open them.

Action step:

Disable 'Suggestions in Search,' 'Suggestions on Lock Screen,' and 'Suggestions on Home Screen.'

11

Set Up Downtime

Screen Time
Settings > Screen Time > Downtime

Block all apps except essentials during specific hours (e.g., 9pm-7am).

Why this matters:

Downtime creates a hard boundary. It's especially powerful for evenings and mornings.

Action step:

Schedule downtime from 9pm-7am. Allow only Phone, Messages, and Health apps.

13

Use Communication Limits

Screen Time
Settings > Screen Time > Communication Limits

Restrict who can contact you during Downtime and Focus modes.

Why this matters:

Not every message needs an immediate response. Limiting communication reduces interruptions.

Action step:

Set Communication Limits to 'Contacts Only' during Downtime and Work focus.

14

Turn On Reduce Motion

Accessibility
Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion

Disable animations and parallax effects.

Why this matters:

Subtle animations make your phone feel more engaging. Reducing them makes it feel more utilitarian.

Action step:

Enable Reduce Motion. Your phone will feel less flashy and more focused.

15

Install unhookd for Default Blocking

Apps
App Store > unhookd

The final step: automate blocking by default instead of relying on manual settings.

Why this matters:

Apple's Screen Time relies on you to block apps when tempted. unhookd flips the model—apps are locked by default, unlocked only when you pre-plan access.

Action step:

Download unhookd free from the App Store. Block your top 3 time-wasting apps and schedule specific access windows.

Why These Settings Aren't Enough Alone

These 15 settings will dramatically reduce distractions and interruptions. But there's a fundamental problem with Apple's Screen Time approach:

Your apps are still open by default. You have to actively choose to block them when tempted.

This is why App Limits fail. By the time you're tempted to open Instagram, the battle's already lost. Tapping "Ignore Limit" takes one second.

unhookd flips the model: your apps are locked by default. You pre-set specific time windows (Slots) for when you want access. Outside those times, the apps are completely inaccessible.

Think of it this way: these iPhone settings reduce interruptions. unhookd changes the default behavior.

Complete Your Setup with unhookd

You've configured your iPhone settings. Now add the missing piece: default blocking that doesn't rely on willpower.
